Reps Demand Breakdown of N2.5 Billion Generated from Raids in Lagos, Onitsha and Aba

The House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drug Administration and Control has demanded a detailed breakdown of N2.5 billion generated byNational Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)

from raids on drug markets in Lagos, Onitsha, and Aba.

During a session with stakeholders in Abuja,Committee chair Hon. Regina Akume said the agency’s report was incomplete and ordered a location-by-location account of the funds.

Speaking earlier,NAFDAC DG Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye said the funds came from fines on traders selling fake drugs. Of the amount, N996 million went to enforcement, N1.175 billion to regulatory expenses, and N159 million was borrowed. About N206 million remained.

She added that no fines were collected during a separate court-ordered raid in Kano, due to security threats and urgency.

The NAFDAC DG also disclosed that although NAFDAC had N19 billion in its account by the end of 2023, only N4.5 billion was released, as N9 billion was removed before access.

NAFDAC’s finance director Adeniji Nma, revealed that the federal treasury now withholds up to 75% of the agency’s revenue, limiting its ability to operate.

The committee demanded more transparency and asked NAFDAC to return with full financial details.
